OSP faces crucial test to deliver after years of public support – CDD-Ghana’s Pumpuni Asante

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) faces a crucial test to live up to its mandate after years of public backing, stated Dr Kojo Pumpuni Asante, Director of Programmes and Advocacy at CDD-Ghana. In an interview on Joy News’ PM Express, the expert explained that the OSP had to invest significant time in establishing its structures and recruiting staff, with full operation only occurring in 2023 and 2024.

Asante emphasized that the office deserves time to continue its work, while also expecting it to deliver on its promises. Public attention has now been predominantly directed towards OSP, as Ghanaians have wholeheartedly supported the institution from its inception. Asante acknowledged that this support has provided a strong foundation for the institution, but also raises expectations regarding its performance.

The expert rejected the notion of a complete overhaul, instead calling for the focus to be on maintaining progress and strengthening OSP. He firmly believes OSP is the appropriate framework for tackling political corruption, but long-term plans should be directed towards enhancing its independence through constitutional protection.

For now, the Supreme Court's affirmation of the OSP's legality provides a window of opportunity for the institution to stabilize and continue its work.
