I want to continue to see OSP deliver on its mandate – Pumpuni Asante

Dr Kojo Pumpuni Asante, Director of Programmes and Advocacy at CDD-Ghana, has called for the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) to maintain its work and fulfill its mandate. He emphasized that the OSP requires time to build the necessary institutional capacity to effectively combat corruption, especially political corruption.

Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express, Asante highlighted that the OSP took several years to establish its infrastructure and recruit staff. He stated that the organization became operational starting in 2023 and 2024.

Asante urged for the OSP to be given the opportunity to continue its work, but acknowledged that it is ultimately up to the office to deliver on its mandates. He noted that the public has closely monitored the OSP’s performance due to the strong support it has received since its establishment. Public backing has been crucial for the OSP, as it has faced attacks and challenges throughout its journey.

The OSP received significant public support, making its continued effectiveness vital. Asante's comments come amid ongoing discussions about the OSP’s future and effectiveness, following the Supreme Court’s affirmation of its legal operations. He sees the ruling as providing the OSP with the space to further develop its institutional capacity. Asante expressed a preference for continuity rather than a complete overhaul of the institution, focusing on the right architecture to tackle political corruption.

While appreciating the Supreme Court’s decision, Asante argued for stronger constitutional protection for the OSP. He emphasized that the ultimate goal should be to elevate the OSP to a constitutional body with constitutional safeguards. The Supreme Court’s affirmation of the OSP’s legality has created the necessary breathing space for the office to continue its transition.
