Democrats aim to unite behind one candidate in Alaska governor’s race as they hope to flip the seat

Democratic Tom Begich has stepped aside from Alaska's gubernatorial race, backing fellow Democrat Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins. This move leaves Kreiss-Tomkins as the sole Democratic candidate, offering the party a chance to reclaim the governor's seat after nearly a quarter-century. Begich's campaign cited financial constraints as the reason for his withdrawal, stating they had raised over $1.3 million but required much more to continue.

The Alaska Democratic Party is now in "lockstep," aiming to secure the governor's office. The last Democrat to hold the position was Tony Knowles, who served from 1994 to 2002. The current Republican governor, Mike Dunleavy, is ineligible for re-election due to term limits. Republicans may attempt to leverage Alaska's ranked-choice voting system to their advantage in the general election.
