Mother Cow Guards Newborn Calf From Stray Dog Attack Near Khopoli Railway Station

On Sunday night, a newborn calf faced an unexpected threat just moments after its birth near a temple close to Khopoli railway station. The newborn's mother, a weary cow, bravely stood guard over its vulnerable sibling, deterring a pack of stray dogs from approaching. The incident unfolded on August 30 when the cow gave birth in the temple vicinity with the calf still attached to its umbilical cord and unable to stand.

The scent of blood reportedly lured the stray dogs, who began to surround the helpless newborn. Despite being exhausted from the birthing process, the mother cow steadfastly positioned herself between the dogs and her offspring, preventing any close contact. When local residents alerted the HELP Foundation's animal activist Sunil Puri, he quickly mobilized other volunteers to the scene.

The team also connected with the 112 police helpline, leading to the arrival of beat marshals from Khopoli police station under the supervision of police inspector Sachin Hire. Initially intending to relocate both the cow and calf to a farmhouse in Yogesh Auti's vehicle, the volunteers abandoned this plan once the mother cow refused to leave its newborn.

Respecting the animal's instincts, the team opted to leave the mother cow at the scene and transport only the calf to Auti's farmhouse for the night. The calf was monitored and cared for overnight before being safely reunited with its mother the following morning. Both the calf and its mother are reported to be safe and well.
