Winnipeg police are under investigation following the death of a 42-year-old man who was Tasered by officers early Sunday. The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba has taken over the probe into the incident.
At around 4:23 a.m., police responded to several 911 calls in the 600 block of McMeans Avenue East in Transcona. The calls reported a man behaving erratically, removing his clothing and walking up and down the street. One of the callers was the man himself, as well as a woman who stated they were experiencing adverse effects after consuming drugs.
About 15 minutes later, a resident reported that a naked man had broken into his home and assaulted him. Police located the naked man, who refused commands and ran away. Officers pursued him, Tasered him and took him into custody.
After being Tasered, the man showed signs of an "agitated chaotic event." Officers called for an ambulance and began performing CPR until emergency personnel arrived. Sadly, the 42-year-old was pronounced dead at the hospital in critical condition. One police officer sustained a minor leg injury during the incident.
