Flooding: PINL’s Pipeline Surveillance Saved Farms, Aquatic Ecosystem, Says Niger Delta Group

The Niger Delta Progressive Alliance (NDPA) has praised Pipeline Infrastructure Nigeria Limited (PINL) for its successful pipeline surveillance and community efforts during recent flooding in the Niger Delta. According to the NDPA, PINL's diligent maintenance of pipeline corridors helped prevent further environmental damage, safeguard farmlands, and shield aquatic ecosystems from the dangers posed by pipeline failures and oil spills.

In a statement, the NDPA emphasized that while annual flooding in the region typically brings serious environmental risks, this particular flood season did not result in widespread oil contamination of floodwaters, dead fish, or oil seeping into farms and residential areas due to pipeline failures. The organization credited PINL for its preventive infrastructure protection, citing regular patrols, monitoring, and surveillance as key factors in identifying and addressing potential threats before they escalated into major incidents.

The NDPA also highlighted PINL's inspections, maintenance, and repair activities that contributed to preserving the integrity of critical pipelines, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall and flooding. The group commended PINL for its interventions in flood-affected communities in Rivers, Bayelsa, and Imo States, noting the restoration efforts in areas previously impacted by illegal refining and the empowerment programs targeting women and youths in host communities.

NDPA Convener Nse Victor Udoh emphasized that PINL's performance during the flood season demonstrated that operational efficiency and responsible community engagement could work together to protect energy infrastructure and the environment.
