Jonathan Kuminga’s Agent Takes Subtle Jab At Lakers After Star Forward Chooses Timberwolves

Jonathan Kuminga’s agent, Aaron Turner, made a subtle remark about the Los Angeles Lakers after his client selected the Minnesota Timberwolves in free agency. The Lakers had been actively pursuing Kuminga and reportedly made an offer for him to be a starting power forward alongside Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves. However, Kuminga ultimately chose the Timberwolves, agreeing to a two-year, $12 million deal that included a player option.

During an interview with The Athletic, Turner explained Kuminga's decision, saying, "This is your chance to go to a place you can feel believed in. They’re going to encourage you. They’re going to push you, but they’re not going to run away from you." While the agent did not specifically mention the Lakers, the comment could be seen as a subtle jab at the team, as the Timberwolves were one of Kuminga's biggest competitors for his services.

The Lakers, Chicago Bulls, and Portland Trail Blazers were all interested in Kuminga, with Portland even offering more money than the Timberwolves. However, Kuminga prioritized organizations where he felt most comfortable playing and growing as a player. Turner revealed that Kuminga's conversations with Anthony Edwards and Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch, along with dinners involving team president Tim Connelly, played a significant role in his decision.

The Timberwolves' owner, front office, coach, and franchise player were all aligned in their desire to bring Kuminga to Minnesota. In contrast, while the Lakers made a compelling pitch, offering Kuminga a $12 million annual deal over three years, Turner noted that the Timberwolves provided a smaller commitment, giving the 23-year-old an earlier opportunity to return to the free agency market.

For Kuminga, the decision to join the Timberwolves was about more than just winning a contract battle. Turner explained that he wanted an organization that would support his development and not abandon him when things became challenging. The Timberwolves seemingly provided that kind of environment, which ultimately led Kuminga to choose them over the Lakers.
