Bengaluru, Karnataka: Karnataka Higher Education Minister Basavaraj Rayareddy stirred a political storm when he declared that Islam was the best religion globally and expressed a desire to undertake the Hajj pilgrimage. Rayareddy made these remarks during a Muslim community mass marriage event in Kuknoor, Koppal, where he spoke favorably of Islam, categorizing it as superior to other faiths.

He stated that he was not inclined towards visiting temples or mutts but harbored a strong inclination to perform the Hajj at least once in his lifetime. The minister clarified that his comments were not intended to disparage other religions but to acknowledge their merits. However, his statement quickly drew criticism from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and others, with accusations of religious insensitivity and a possible attempt to appease the Muslim vote bank.

Despite subsequent clarifications by Rayareddy, insisting that he respected all religions equally, the controversy persisted, with opposition leaders, including the Leader of Opposition in the State Assembly, vehemently condemning his remarks and labeling them as part of a "fundamentalist" approach to religion.
