Indonesia probes citizens alleged to have fought for Russia in Ukraine

Indonesia is probing allegations that several of its citizens have joined the Russian military and are fighting in Ukraine, according to a foreign ministry statement. Ukrainian authorities provided the information, which is currently being verified by several Indonesian ministries and government institutions. The ministry did not specify the number of Indonesian citizens under suspicion.

Should the allegations prove true, the fighters could face the loss of their Indonesian citizenship. Indonesian law mandates that anyone wishing to serve a foreign military must obtain presidential permission. The ministry emphasized that if verified, the involvement of Indonesian citizens in a foreign nation's armed forces would be an individual act, not reflecting the stance or policy of the Indonesian government.

Indonesia has not historically been a source of mercenaries for either Russia or Ukraine, both of which have recruited foreign fighters during the ongoing war. The foreign ministry clarified that pertinent details about the suspects, such as their identities, citizenship status, recruitment methods, and involvement forms, still require confirmation. The Indonesian government will also probe potential instances of fraud, exploitation, or recruitment through deceptive job offers that do not align with the advertised purpose.

Reports have emerged that citizens from African nations have been forcibly conscripted into the Russian army to fight in Ukraine. These individuals are reportedly lured with false promises of employment opportunities abroad.
