Indonesia, US and allies launch annual military drill

Indonesia, the United States, and numerous allied nations inaugurated the annual Super Garuda Shield military drills on Monday, aiming to enhance defense capabilities and thwart aggression in the Asia-Pacific region. With nearly two decades of history, this year's event will see 4,700 soldiers from diverse nations, such as Britain, France, and Japan, conducting training exercises across various locations, including Sumatra and Borneo islands, until September 11. East Timor, Italy, Thailand, and other countries will observe the drills.

Patrick J. Ellis, commander of the US Fourth Infantry Division, emphasized the significance of the exercise in fostering a robust "human architecture" to maintain stability in the Indo-Pacific. He noted that readiness cannot be rushed when a crisis emerges, highlighting the drills' importance at a military school in Bandung, east of Jakarta, where the drills officially commenced.

The exercises will incorporate special forces infiltration training and cyber defense drills, according to Ellis. In April, Indonesia upgraded its defense cooperation with the US to a Major Defence Cooperation Partnership, underscoring the nation's role as a vital anchor for regional stability. This week, China's foreign and defence ministers visited Indonesia to discuss increased political and military collaboration.

Subsequently, both nations will engage in joint military exercises called Heping Garuda, focusing on humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, and military-to-military cooperation later in the year.

Indonesia has become a member of the BRICS bloc of emerging economies, which comprises Russia and China. However, President Prabowo Subianto recently signed a trade agreement with US President Donald Trump and joined his Board of Peace.
