Indonesia, US and allies launch annual military drill

The United States, Indonesia and allies commenced their annual joint military exercises, Super Garuda Shield, on Monday. This drill aims to enhance defense capabilities and deter aggression in the Asia-Pacific region. The joint navy drill involving China earlier this month drew criticism from Taiwan, while Indonesia maintains a neutral foreign policy, seeking good relations with both Washington and Beijing.

This year's exercise involves 4,700 soldiers from nations such as Britain, France, Japan, Timor Leste, Italy, and Thailand, with additional observers from various countries. The drill will take place across locations like Sumatra and Kalimantan until September 11, and will encompass special forces infiltration training and cyber defence drills.

US Commander Patrick J. Ellis emphasized the importance of building human structures to maintain safety in the Indo-Pacific. Indonesia's defense cooperation with the US was elevated to a Major Defense Cooperation Partnership in April, highlighting its role as a vital anchor to regional stability. China and Indonesia recently agreed to strengthen military ties and cooperate on minerals, energy, and technology.

Indonesia, a $1.4 trillion G20 economy, is rich in resources including nickel, tin, copper, gold, and palm oil. China dominates investment in Indonesia's nickel processing sector, leading some companies to seek alternative supplies. Indonesia will hold joint military exercises with China under Heping Garuda, focused on humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, and military-to-military cooperation.
