Grand Canyon flash flood: 10 key points on evacuations, missing people and more

The Grand Canyon experienced an intense flash flood on Saturday, rapidly transforming peaceful zones into torrents. Trails, footbridges, and the Colorado River sustained damage, leading to the evacuation of approximately 62 individuals by Sunday afternoon. Park officials indicated that about 15 people might be missing, though this was an initial estimate. The flooding commenced around 2:30 pm after a series of storms passed through Bright Angel Canyon and the Phantom Ranch area.

Nearly all footbridges spanning Bright Angel Creek were destroyed, cutting off hiker access. The park's sole water pipeline serving tourists and residents also broke, leaving lodges and hotels closed starting Monday. Residents were advised to conserve water. The Colorado River was closed to traffic to prevent further debris from entering. Evacuee David Gregory recounted his experience, emphasizing the rapid and dangerous conditions of the flood.

Additional rainfall and thunderstorms were forecasted into Monday, with showers primarily affecting the northern side of the canyon. The Grand Canyon, known for its depth of about a mile, stretches 278 miles along the Colorado River. It attracted over 400,000 visitors last month, with over 4.4 million visitors in 2025.
