Eastern Region records 30 mining-related deaths since January – NADMO

Since January 2026, approximately 30 individuals have lost their lives in mining-related accidents across various mining districts within the Eastern Region, according to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO). Deputy Eastern Regional NADMO Director responsible for Technical and Disaster Risk Reduction, Emmanuel Konja Tullah, disclosed this information during a media briefing at Asaman Tamfoe, the site of a recent pit collapse that claimed the lives of seven people.

Tullah highlighted that these recurring incidents underscore the need for stricter enforcement of safety regulations at mining locations, especially the requirement for concession owners to securely cover or manage abandoned pits.

He emphasized that there have been more than 30 mining-related deaths within the region alone in 2026. Tullah urged concession owners to enhance their oversight activities, ensuring proper coordination and security measures to prevent future occurrences. NADMO intends to collaborate with these concession owners and other relevant agencies to intensify educational efforts on safety.

Mr. Tullah urged concession owners to assume full responsibility for operations on their mining sites and to strictly adhere to safety protocols. He further stated that NADMO will collaborate with other agencies and stakeholders to promote compliance and public education in mining communities throughout the region.
