DR Congo Ebola epidemic passes 6,000 cases

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is experiencing its deadliest Ebola outbreak ever, with over 6,000 confirmed cases and nearly 3,000 deaths, according to the latest toll from Congolese authorities. This latest outbreak, which began in mid-May, surpasses the 2018-2020 epidemic as the worst in the country's history. The outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo strain of the virus, for which there is currently no approved vaccine or specific treatment.

The epidemic has rapidly spread across six provinces in the restive north and east of the DRC, regions plagued by ongoing violence from a variety of armed groups. With the state largely absent in many parts of the epidemic's epicenter, health workers have faced additional challenges, including distrust of authorities among some affected communities.

The response to the epidemic has struggled to keep pace with the surge in cases, further exacerbated by the lack of resources. Health workers have also had to contend with the Bundibugyo variant's tendency to cause seemingly mild symptoms in its initial stages, making detection more difficult.

Most of the DRC's previous Ebola epidemics have been caused by the Zaire strain of the virus. Currently, several vaccines and treatments are being tested to determine their effectiveness against the Bundibugyo strain.
