Cricket: Nigeria U-19 girls win World Cup qualifier opener

Nigeria's U-19 girls' cricket team started their 2027 ICC U-19 Women's T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier Division 1 campaign with a victory over Uganda U-19 Women by four wickets in Tanzania, according to PUNCH Sports Extra. Uganda won the toss and opted to bat first, and Nigeria's disciplined bowling restricted them to 59 for seven in their 20 overs.

Shadiah Gilingish Nabulime was the top scorer for Uganda with 22 runs off 34 balls, and Jimia Abdallah Mohamed contributed 13 runs from 25 balls. Nigeria's bowling unit, led by Chisom Okpe with two wickets for just four runs in four overs and Peace Usen with two wickets for 12 runs, put up an impressive performance. With 60 runs required for victory, Nigeria's chase remained under control until Tino Sarah's sensational spell, where she took five wickets for just 13 runs in four overs, including two maiden overs, putting Nigeria under pressure.

Despite the pressure, the Junior Female Yellow Greens maintained composure and determination to chase down the target. Omosigho Eguakun and captain Christabel Chukwuonye played crucial roles with patient innings of 24 and 13 runs, respectively. Nigeria's cricket journey in the Africa Qualifier continues as they aim to return to the World Cup after their impressive performance in Malaysia last year.

Their next match is against Malawi on Monday, followed by a game against hosts Tanzania on Wednesday, September 2. A top-two finish will secure them a semi-final spot, where they will face one of the teams from Group B, including Kenya, Namibia, Rwanda, and Zimbabwe. The tournament winner will represent Africa at the main event in 2027, with South Africa already securing one of Africa's qualification spots after finishing among the top four teams at the previous World Cup, which India won.
