ChatGPT becomes first AI chatbot to face tougher EU rules

The European Union has classified ChatGPT, Reddit, and Roblox as large online platforms subject to stricter regulations, marking the first time an AI chatbot faces such scrutiny. These platforms, with over 45 million monthly active users, must comply with the Digital Services Act (DSA), a content law that addresses systemic risks, minors' well-being, and other societal impacts.

EU technology chief Henna Virkkunen emphasized the heightened scrutiny aligns with the significant influence of these platforms on citizens and society. The three platforms now have four months to adhere to the additional obligations outlined by the Brussels-based commission, which classified ChatGPT as a search engine. This classification and the DSA's application to Roblox and Reddit signify a broader effort by the EU to rein in Big Tech through regulatory enforcement, despite US pushback.
