ChatGPT becomes first AI chatbot to face tougher EU rules

The European Union has placed OpenAI's ChatGPT, Reddit, and Roblox on a list of digital services that will face stricter safety regulations in a first for an AI chatbot. The designations, which mark platforms with over 45 million monthly active users, will subject the services to heightened oversight and accountability. EU Technology Commissioner Henna Virkkunen stated that the move comes due to the significant impact these platforms have on citizens and society.

These very large platforms must now assess and mitigate systemic risks related to illegal content dissemination, minors' well-being, and other factors under the Digital Services Act. The four-month deadline for compliance with the additional obligations is fast approaching for ChatGPT, Reddit, and Roblox.
