Bangi MP pays tribute to predecessor Ong after DAP exit

PUBLISHED ON JUNE 8, 2023: Bangi MP Syahredzan Johan has paid tribute to his former predecessor, Ong Kian Ming, following the latter's decision to leave the DAP political party. Syahredzan, who is also a DAP vice-chairman, acknowledged Ong's significant contributions to his 2022 general election (GE15) campaign and his successful election as the Bangi MP, as reported by Berita Harian.

Syahredzan expressed his deep appreciation for Ong's assistance, even prior to his election as MP, stating that he values all Ong's contributions to the party. Ong's decision to leave the DAP was his personal choice, and Syahredzan respects it.

Ong announced his resignation from the DAP today after being a member for approximately 14 years. He clarified that he has no plans to join another party or contest in the upcoming general election. However, Ong indicated that he will support former Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin in his campaign during the 2016 general election.

Ong served as the Serdang MP from 2013 to 2018, followed by his tenure as the Bangi MP from 2018 until his departure in 2022. He also held the position of deputy international trade and industry minister from 2018 to 2020. Syahredzan affirmed that Ong had the right to assist Khairy in his campaign and emphasized that it would be akin to the support he received from Ong during the 2022 GE15.

DAP chairman Gobind Singh Deo did not address Ong's resignation directly, merely stating that he had not yet read the former Bangi MP's statement. When questioned about the matter by reporters, Deo emphasized that there was no need for political discussions today.
