A new UAE school year, and a broader vision for education

More than a million students across the UAE are set to return to school today, after a two-month summer break. With the new academic year beginning, every individual – students, parents, teachers, school administrations, and authorities – must embrace fresh opportunities. In recent times, the Ministry of Education has pondered deeply on the true purpose of education, especially crucial in today's digital age where young individuals are influenced significantly by screen time and social media.

The current focus is shifting from merely delivering content to nurturing character development. This year, there will be a stronger emphasis on nurturing young minds to think critically, relate to others, utilize technology responsibly, and embody responsible citizenship.

Public school students from kindergarten to year 2 will have no homework, allowing them to spend more time on family life, skill development, and unstructured reading, which fosters a lasting love for learning. Additionally, year 6 classes will refrain from using screens for subjects including English, Arabic, science, and mathematics.

This move stemmed from a study conducted on 2,500 pupils at nine public schools, which uncovered that retention in screen-free classrooms nearly doubled, alongside improved behavior, discipline, and peer relationships. The Minister of Education, Sarah Al Amiri, highlighted that stronger friendships emerged simply due to reduced screen time.

Another alteration involves the assessment methods for students aged between 9 and 12. Both central exams and school-based assessments will carry equal weight, granting schools increased flexibility in evaluating students. Moreover, diagnostic tests will be incorporated to help teachers identify students' academic levels and provide extra support where required.

Teachers emerge as the backbone of this initiative. Over 1,500 of them have joined organizations like Gems Education, emphasizing that educators are the most significant investment in a child's future. Education aims not only to transfer knowledge and deliver academic excellence, but also to help children develop good habits and a moral compass for navigating a rapidly changing and unpredictable world.

These changes in the new term are not solely academic in nature; they aim to create curious, empathetic, resilient, and connected young individuals. The ultimate measure of a successful school year will be the extent to which students become well-rounded individuals, possessing curiosity, empathy, resilience, and strong connections with others.
