Zambian opposition leader charged with treason

Zambian opposition leader Brian Mundubile has been formally charged with treason, according to his lawyer Milner Katolo. The allegation comes in the wake of heightened political tensions following the disputed presidential election results. Mundubile's NRPUP party had contested the legitimacy of President Hakainde Hichilema's re-election, which he secured with 60% of the vote, compared to Mundubile's 38%.

In the aftermath of the election, authorities accused Mundubile and his party of planning an armed insurgency, a claim Mundubile's camp strongly denied. Following a deadly raid by security forces on a property linked to Mundubile in Lusaka, the opposition leader went into hiding. He and his running mate, Makebi Zulu, later sought refuge at a United Nations building, where they were subsequently detained upon President Hichilema's intervention.

Despite the opposition's efforts to challenge the election outcome, legal proceedings were halted when the courts were sealed by authorities on the final day for filing a case. Regional and international observers noted the election day as largely peaceful, yet Zambia's Human Rights Commission has called for accountability regarding the whereabouts of individuals detained in connection with the elections.
