Tropical storm Karina strengthens into hurricane in Pacific, threatens major damage this week

Tropical Storm Karina has intensified into a hurricane in the Pacific Ocean, according to forecasters. The cyclone is located far out at sea and is not currently posing any threat to land. At its peak, the storm was generating maximum sustained winds of 80 miles per hour (130 kilometers per hour), placing it at the level of a Category 1 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.

Major hurricanes are classified as Category 3 or higher. Karina is situated approximately 820 miles southwest of the southernmost tip of Mexico's Baja California Peninsula. It has been moving northwestward at a speed of 15 miles per hour, with a forecasted path taking it further into the Pacific Ocean. Although Karina is projected to remain well clear of any potential land impact, the storm's swells are expected to generate hazardous surf and dangerous rip current conditions along certain sections of southwest Mexico and the Baja California Peninsula.

In a separate development, another tropical storm, Lowell, is located 1,150 miles southeast of Hawaii. However, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) forecasts that Lowell poses no threat to land.
