Zambian opposition leader charged with treason

Former Zambian opposition leader Brian Mundubile faces formal treason charges, announced by his lawyer amid political tensions ahead of the president's inauguration. The charges follow a disputed presidential election where incumbent Hakainde Hichilema won with 60% of votes, while Mundubile secured 38%. Security forces raided Mundubile's property in Lusaka the day after the election, resulting in a deadly confrontation and the death of a former cabinet minister.

Opposition politicians, including Mundubile and his running mate Makebi Zulu, sought refuge at a United Nations facility, but were later detained. Despite not filing a formal court challenge, legal experts note the opposition had the opportunity to contest the election results in court. Prosecutors filed treason charges against Mundubile, Zulu, and 17 others, alleging the NRPUP party planned an armed insurgency, which they strongly deny.

Regional observers characterized the election process as largely peaceful, but domestic human rights monitors expressed concern over missing detainees and undisclosed arrests. President Hichilema is set to take the oath of office for his second term on September 1, with observers stressing the importance of transparency and adherence to due process in maintaining the nation's democratic institutions.
