‘We have one homeland, Malaysia’: Anwar urges Malaysians to keep the spirit of independence alive

PUTRAJAYA, Aug 30 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim urged Malaysians to keep the spirit of independence alive, emphasizing that unity among all communities was crucial for the nation's growth and justice. He stated that independence was not merely about systems or the nation itself, but rather about instilling an independent spirit in every Malaysian.

The spirit of independence should unite Malaysians, transcending race, district, and region, as forefathers believed that all citizens, including Malays and Bumiputera, must play a part in defending rights and upholding justice. Anwar highlighted the importance of translating this spirit into efforts to build a Malaysia Madani, inspired by the courage of past freedom fighters who called for unity and consensus, upholding the promises of the Proclamation of Independence.

He praised Malaysia for remaining one of the more peaceful nations despite challenges and ups and downs, demonstrating that unity could ensure the nation's survival. Over the years, Malaysia has achieved significant growth, with GDP increasing by six percent in 2026 and investments and trade reaching their highest levels since 1957 and 1963.

The Prime Minister urged Malaysians to remain united and work towards a stronger, more agile Malaysia, reflecting on the nation's ability to overcome challenges and achieve remarkable success since gaining independence in 1957.
