US strikes Iran for first time in a month, Tehran retaliates

On Sunday, the United States conducted strikes on Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island, located in the Strait of Hormuz, marking its first attacks on Iran since late July. US Central Command (CENTCOM) spokesman revealed that Iran's Revolutionary Guards were preparing to launch rockets carrying sea mines towards the strategic waterway.

This comes six months into the ongoing US-Iran conflict, which had been tapering off. The Trump administration has focused on economic warfare rather than military confrontations against Iran. Iran has effectively monopolized the Strait of Hormuz, a pivotal sea route responsible for transporting one-fifth of the globe's oil before the United States and Israel initiated the attacks on February 28.

CENTCOM successfully cleared sea mines from the strait's shipping lanes last week, according to Navy Captain Tim Hawkins, a CENTCOM spokesperson. US forces are vigilantly monitoring the area and prepared to safeguard the uninterrupted flow of commerce through this vital waterway. Diplomatic initiatives, led by mediating nations including Pakistan and Qatar, have persistently endeavored to terminate the war without success.

Although a ceasefire was achieved in April and a memorandum of understanding for a final peace treaty was signed in June, no agreement has materialized, and Washington has since imposed an economic blockade against Tehran. The April ceasefire halted the most severe fighting, yet intermittent clashes, primarily surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, have diminished the likelihood of a comprehensive peace deal.

US Senator Jack Reed, the top Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee, criticized President Donald Trump on Friday, stating that six months into the war, no objectives have been accomplished. Reed further asserted that Trump's actions have significantly weakened the United States' standing in the Middle East and globally.
