Trump calls for ‘punishment’ of NBC reporter

The threat came after Welker criticized Trump's mixed endorsement of political candidates in party primaries, stating that he had secured victory in 98% to 100% of the races.

Welker's comments were made in response to a local NBC affiliate, where she expressed her belief that Trump would have a significant influence over the upcoming midterms. Trump accused Welker of being "unpopular" and hosting a once-great talk show that had fallen out of favor. He claimed her inaccurate reporting warranted FCC investigation.

Welker, an award-winning journalist, moderated a 2020 presidential debate between Trump and Joe Biden, who won the election. An NBC News spokesperson defended Welker, stating that she is one of the best in the business and that they stand by her. The FCC, currently led by a close associate of Trump, has been criticized for its attempts to pressure broadcasters and reporters to align with the administration's views.

Several media organizations have filed lawsuits against the FCC, arguing that its actions violate the First Amendment of the US Constitution, which guarantees freedom of speech. The FCC's authority to punish broadcasters or reporters for their viewpoints has been questioned by legal experts, as the Supreme Court has ruled that US law does not grant the FCC such power.
