Engineering is not just a degree, but a way of thinking: Former AICTE chairman

Former AICTE chairman T.G. Sitharam emphasized on Sunday that engineering education should extend beyond a mere degree and instead instill students with fundamental knowledge, problem-solving skills, human values, and an innovative spirit. Addressing first-year BE students at Vidyavardhaka College of Engineering in Mysuru, Sitharam urged them to strengthen their grasp of mathematics, physics, and basic sciences, moving away from rote learning to achieve a deeper understanding of concepts.

He stressed that engineering is not simply a degree but a mindset that involves recognizing problems, thinking critically, and devising practical solutions. Sitharam encouraged students to embrace emerging technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and data science, which should augment, rather than replace, a solid foundation in core engineering disciplines.

He likened AI to "augmented intelligence," capable of significantly enhancing human capabilities. Sitharam also appealed to parents to refrain from placing undue pressure on their children regarding academic achievements, viewing failure in exams, projects, internships, or job opportunities as an opportunity for learning and improvement.

He urged students to overcome the fear of failure. Highlighting India's advancements in various fields, including research, startups, digital infrastructure, semiconductors, clean energy, and advanced manufacturing, Sitharam urged students to explore emerging domains like quantum technology, biotechnology, and AI. He stressed that education is an ongoing process and urged students to engage in continuous learning, participating in innovation clubs, laboratory projects, hackathons, symposiums, and real-world challenges.

Sitharam called upon students to become innovators, entrepreneurs, product developers, and job creators, asserting that India's goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047 will hinge heavily on its young technical workforce. Vidyavardhaka Sangha Secretary P. Vishwanath highlighted VVCE's tradition of academic excellence and commitment to holistic education, emphasizing the significance of technical proficiency, values, leadership, and a global perspective.

VVCE principal B. Sadashive Gowda explained the institution's academic framework and support systems to the students. Alumni Karthick R., Preethi R., and Darshith Jain shared their experiences, urging students to actively participate in college clubs, which would offer valuable opportunities to develop skills, confidence, and leadership qualities alongside academics.
