This baby boomer vs. Gen X Senate race emerges as key test of generational change in U.S. politics and what age is too old for Congress

In a tight Massachusetts Senate race, 80-year-old Democrat Ed Markey is facing a challenge from 47-year-old Republican Seth Moulton. One of the key talking points in the debate is whether Markey is too old to continue serving in Congress, especially as he would be 86 at the end of his next term. The controversy was highlighted when Markey, during a debate, struggled to explain his use of artificial intelligence (AI) platforms like AI assistants or ChatGPT, stating that he relies on "whatever is inside of my iPhone or my iPad."

To 18-year-old Moulton supporter Arsen Bagdassarian, this lack of knowledge raises concerns about Markey's ability to represent a generation dealing with issues that didn't exist when he entered politics 50 years ago. Bagdassarian, a Boston University freshman, expressed frustration that Markey seemed "as clueless as he really was" on the topic.

Bagdassarian emphasized that AI is "a major concern" and that the country needs leaders who understand how to regulate it. Young Democrats, particularly those in heavily Democratic Massachusetts, are looking for change and are increasingly concerned about the impact of modern technologies like AI, rising housing costs, and student debt.

While some young voters argue that Markey's age is not a dealbreaker, many support Moulton's message of "generational change," arguing that younger politicians are more likely to have a grasp on modern issues. Moulton seized on Markey's AI comments, telling him, "Senator, if you don't even know what you're using on your phone or your iPad, like this is why we need a new generation of leaders to regulate these technologies."

Moulton emphasized that it's less about Markey's age and more about his ability to understand and regulate the rapidly changing technological landscape.
