Scherzer leads rolling Blue Jays past Mariners, into pivotal series against Guardians

TORONTO - The Toronto Blue Jays will enter Cleveland for a crucial three-game series against the Guardians on Tuesday. The team’s offence has been outstanding in their recent three-game sweep of the Seattle Mariners, scoring 19 runs against just 4 by the Mariners. Starting pitcher Max Scherzer delivered a remarkable performance in the final game, achieving a seven-inning shutout and recording season-highs in strikeouts (10) and pitches thrown (97).

Scherzer, who has won a game since March 31, moved up to the ninth spot on MLB’s all-time strikeout list with 3,535.

Scherzer’s impressive outing demonstrated why he is a key player for the Blue Jays. Despite missing time due to forearm tendinitis, a left ankle issue, and back spasms, Scherzer remains sharp and competitive. Blue Jays manager John Schneider praised Scherzer’s performance, calling it "vintage Max."

The Blue Jays (68-70) are currently 1 1/2 games behind the Guardians (69-68) in the race for the final American League wild-card spot. With 24 games remaining in the season, the pressure is on, as the Blue Jays have won 22 of their last 34 games, surpassing the AL East-leading Tampa Bay Rays’ record of 23-12 during the same span.

Rookie pitcher Brett Bateman, acquired at the August trade deadline, has played a significant role in the team's resurgence, leading off games and contributing with 26 hits and a .368 batting average in his first 19 games.
