College football player MicahJo Barnett dies after medical emergency on field

William Jewell College football player MicahJo Barnett, a 20-year-old junior studying business administration, has died following a medical emergency on the team's sideline during Saturday's game, the school announced. Barnett, who previously played at Liberty North High School, was a member of the William Jewell Cardinals football program.

The school suspended the game after the medical incident, according to ABC affiliate station KMBC-TV. William Jewell Vice President for Athletics Ryan Erlacher expressed deep sorrow over Barnett's death, describing him as an "exceptional young man who made a tremendous impact on the Jewell and Liberty communities." Erlacher requested privacy for Barnett's family and asked for everyone to respect their grief.

Barnett's teammate Jayshawn Richmond recalled the young man's final moments, noting that he scored just before passing away. The William Jewell College and the Liberty, Missouri community mourned Barnett's passing, with the college encouraging students and staff to seek support from its counseling services or the office of the chaplain.

A vigil honoring Barnett and his family was held Saturday night on the college quad. Funeral arrangements will be shared when they become available.
