The Pittsburgh Steelers have reduced their roster to 53 players and will officially commence the 2026 season next week with their game against the Atlanta Falcons. Currently, the Steelers hold a three-point lead over their competitors, according to FanDuel Sportsbook. Despite roster cuts, the team is actively building its practice squad, which will play a crucial role in both long-term development and game-day scenarios.

The practice squad, now expanded due to roster elevation rules, can accommodate a maximum of 16 players. Seven of these spots are reserved for players with international experience, with Julius Welschof serving as the team's current representative in this category. A maximum of six players can have unlimited NFL experience, while up to ten players with up to two accrued seasons are allowed, with the total not surpassing ten players.

Players with less than nine regular-season games in an accrued season are also eligible. The team can temporarily promote up to two practice squad players to the active roster weekly, but can only do so up to three times per player before officially signing them to the 53-man roster. Additionally, teams can protect four practice squad players each week to prevent them from being signed by another team's 53-man roster.
