Oyo varsity accreditation: Parents seek help from FG

Parents of students at Atiba University in Oyo State have appealed to the Federal Government for assistance amid concerns over the accreditation status of the university's Law programme. Represented by lawyer Victor Opatola, the parents are requesting intervention from the Federal Government, the National Universities Commission (NUC), the Minister of Education, and the Council of Legal Education (CLE) to resolve the matter before the next academic session.

The parents are worried about the impact of the CLE's decision on students who have already invested significant time and money into their Law studies, only to discover that their programme is not accredited by the CLE. Some students have spent up to five years studying Law, while their parents have invested substantially in their education.

The parents argue that the CLE placed Atiba University on a 10-year moratorium, meaning that students are currently unable to proceed to Law School, and those already enrolled face uncertainty over their progression.

Opatola has urged the authorities to transfer the affected students to accredited Law faculties without restarting their studies, and to release their academic records, facilitate their transfer to accredited Law programmes, and refund tuition and levies paid. The parents' petition to the NUC, filed on July 10, 2026, states that the CLE's published list of accredited Law faculties, as of June 2026, does not include Atiba University.

The parents are also calling for the Consumer Protection Commission to intervene, describing the matter as a consumer protection issue.
