NHAI mandates end-to-end AI-MC deployment for projects over 20 km in length

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has mandated the use of Automated and Intelligent Machine-Aided Construction (AI-MC) for all highway projects over 20 km in length and exceeding Rs 500 crore in cost. This decision aims to tackle quality issues, which have become a major concern for the government. Contractors will be required to employ AI-MC throughout the entire construction process, from the foundation to the road surface, including embankments, subgrades, and the Granular Sub-Base (GSB).

The technology utilizes on-board computers and sensors on heavy machinery to enhance construction quality, accuracy, and uniformity. AI-MC replaces manual monitoring with real-time execution and quality control, reducing human errors and ensuring consistent construction standards. Real-time data sharing with NHAI officials is mandatory, fostering accountability and minimizing the likelihood of corner-cutting by sub-contractors.
