More than 20 people may be missing after Grand Canyon flash flood

More than 20 individuals may be unaccounted for following a flash flood in Grand Canyon National Park, according to the National Park Service's statement released on Sunday. The torrential downpours swept through Bright Angel Canyon and the Phantom Ranch region on Saturday, prompting the service to collaborate with Arizona authorities for the evacuation of individuals and the search for those in the impacted area.

The park service solicited public assistance to provide information regarding the missing and any hikers who might have been present in the vicinity. The initial flash flood commenced around 2:30 pm on Saturday. As of Sunday morning, 62 people have been successfully evacuated, with additional evacuations anticipated. To date, there have been no reported injuries.

The National Park Service cautioned that further thunderstorms and heavy rainfall are anticipated through Monday, potentially triggering more flash floods, debris flows, rockfall, and alterations to trail and river conditions.
