Man, 53, murdered, body dumped and set ablaze in Nyamira banana plantation

On August 27, police in Nyamira County launched an investigation into the gruesome murder of 53-year-old Mark Ondiek Otawa. His body was discovered partially burnt and dumped within his family compound's banana plantation, two days after he was last seen. It was established that Otawa had likely been murdered elsewhere before his body was transported to his family land.

His head showed extensive injuries, and his left shoulder displayed a deep cut, suggesting that his body had been "totally dismantled" after it was set ablaze. Deep cuts were also found on both of his legs, apparently inflicted by dogs that had consumed the flesh, leaving bones exposed. A panga and a torch were recovered at the scene, which could serve as potential evidence in the ongoing investigation.

Otawa was last seen alive at around 6 am on August 27 when he left his home to pick tea. His 14-year-old daughter discovered his body at about 4 pm, while she was en route to collect vegetables. The body was subsequently moved to the Nyamira County Referral Hospital mortuary for preservation pending a postmortem examination. As of now, it remains unclear whether any arrests have been made in the case, as the investigation continues.

In another incident, police in Lamu East Sub-County are currently probing a reported murder in Kizingitini Village. Upon arrival at the reported scene, officers were met with hostility from a group of youths who were armed with crude weapons. The officers were forced to retreat and requested reinforcements, only to find the house locked from outside by the time the reinforcements arrived.

The area chief informed the police that the alleged victim's body had already been removed from the house and taken to an unknown location within the village. Investigations into this incident are also ongoing, with police remaining on standby to gather information and maintain peace in the area.
