Khmara: Ukraine has four possible counters to faster jet-powered Shaheds

On August 30, Ukraine's Defense Minister Yevhenii Khmara informed reporters that the country presently possesses four potential interceptors with the capability to down jet-powered Shaheds. These interceptors have already been tested in the field and require further enhancement to reach their optimal performance level, with mass production aiming towards thousands of units.

On August 24, Ukrainian presidential technology adviser Serhiy Beskrestnov, known by his call sign Flash, disclosed to Radio NV that Ukrainian manufacturers had not yet engineered jet-powered interceptor drones for Shaheds and Banderols. He explained that their anticipation for such interceptors had been persistent, dating back to the winter when manufacturers claimed readiness.

However, the complexity proved greater than anticipated, with months passing and no progress yet achieved. Beskrestnov highlighted that Russia's introduction of the more advanced, jet-powered Geran-4 Shaheds, capable of reaching speeds between 450-550 kilometers per hour, has further escalated the challenge. To counteract this threat, Beskrestnov asserted that Ukrainian defenses are currently able to intercept up to 80% of jet-powered Shaheds using a combination of air-to-air missiles, surface-to-air missiles, and MANPADS.

According to aviation expert Valerii Romanenko, who shared insights with Radio NV in July, Ukraine's interception rate against Shaheds has dropped from 90% to 76% due to the Russians deploying jet-powered Shaheds, which travel at 300-450 kilometers per hour, as opposed to the 180 kilometers per hour of conventional Shaheds.
