Greece, Turkey Clash Over Protected Aegean Marine Areas

Greece and Turkey, once at odds over territorial disputes, have maintained a period of relative calm since a devastating earthquake struck Turkey in 2023. This calm was briefly interrupted in early 2024 when Turkey designated two marine parks in the Aegean Sea and eastern Mediterranean. Greece swiftly labeled these designations as "illegal," asserting that the parks' areas lie beyond Turkey's territorial waters and therefore have no legal validity.

Both nations have territorial claims over the Aegean, making the situation increasingly tense. Greece has also announced plans for its own marine parks in the Ionian Islands and the southern Cyclades, which it maintains are within Greek territorial waters. Turkey, however, has harshly criticized these moves, viewing them as an attempt to challenge Greek sovereignty and implement its "Mavi Vatan" doctrine, which claims special economic rights over maritime areas surrounding Greece and Cyprus.

Greece, aware of Turkey's superior military strength, has bolstered its defense capabilities, including investments in fighter jets, frigates, submarines, and air defense systems. Despite calls for greater cooperation, the two countries remain deeply divided over their maritime boundaries and the strategic significance of the Aegean.
