El-Sayed courts Jewish Democrats, apologizes for comments on Michigan terror attack

As the United States gears up for midterm elections in November, Republicans are turning their attention to Hasan Piker, a prominent left-wing influencer who has become a liability for Democratic candidates. Congresswoman Debbie Dingell of Michigan expressed her exasperation, stating she is "done" with being asked about Piker during her reelection rally. Democrats are concerned that Piker's controversial remarks may divert attention from their criticism of President Donald Trump's economic record.

Piker, a 35-year-old online commentator with three million followers on Twitch, has been accused of anti-Semitism due to his strong criticism of Israel. He recently sparked controversy by suggesting that Jews who support Israel are putting themselves at risk, stating, "You're running around basically tying your entire identity to a country that inevitably will be seen as basically Jewish ISIS, and you're saying, as Jews, this is all we care about."

This prompted the Democratic candidates in Michigan to distance themselves from Piker, with Abdul El-Sayed distancing himself and calling anti-Semitism a "scourge." Democratic Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin also condemned Piker's remarks, emphasizing that no community should face violence for their political views.

Piker, who identifies as a "socialist" and "anti-imperialist," hit back at the criticism, calling himself a victim of a "coordinated smear campaign" and Islamophobia. He maintains that his stance on Israel is gaining ground in the United States, where support for Israel has traditionally been strong. Despite this, Pew Research Center found that 62% of Americans held a negative view of Israeli authorities in May, down from 51% in April 2019.

Piker's popularity among young conservatives, who prioritize hyper-masculinity, contrasts with his focus on physical appearance and political issues in his streamed commentary.
