‘Do whatever you feel is right’: Suryakumar reveals call to drop Samson during T20 WC

Former India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav recounted his conversation with struggling opener Sanju Samson prior to the 2026 World Cup, where Samson was initially dropped from the national team. As the top order faltered during the tournament's early stages, Samson later became the hero for Suryakumar's team during the home World Cup in late February, ultimately winning the Player of the Tournament award.

Notably, Samson had only contributed 46 runs in five innings against New Zealand before the World Cup. Suryakumar, who led India to the title, explained that he had to make the decision in consultation with the Kerala batter. During their conversation on the bus, Samson simply told Suryakumar, "Do whatever you feel is right to make this team win the World Cup."

He assured Suryakumar that he was available whenever needed, preparing as if he would play. Suryakumar shared, "There are people like this too" on Aakash Chopra's YouTube channel. Dropping Samson was the toughest call during Suryakumar's captaincy, as he recognized Samson's positive character. Even during a difficult phase in 2024, Samson asked Suryakumar for guidance.

Suryakumar assured him of his confidence, stating that he would play seven matches, even if he failed to score. Returning to the opening slot before a crucial Super Eight match against the West Indies, Samson delivered three consecutive centuries, including a standout performance in the semi-final and final against England and New Zealand, respectively.

Since then, both Suryakumar and Samson have faced challenges; Suryakumar no longer plays for the national team, while Samson was subsequently dropped from the T20I side following India's tour to England in July.
