Canadian Evan Kung captures season-ending even to earn first Elite Series victory

Clayton, New York - Canadian fishing enthusiast Evan Kung secured his Elite Series career with a thrilling win at the season-ending event on the St. Lawrence River. Kung, hailing from Pickering, Ontario, triumphed in his first Elite Series victory, claiming the $US100,000 first-place prize and an additional $1,000 for catching the largest fish of the day, a 6.13-pound smallmouth bass.

The win proved to be an opportune moment for Kung, who had been struggling to climb the standings prior to the event. Now standing 55th overall, Kung has qualified for the prestigious US$1-million Bassmaster Classic tournament, taking place from March 19-21 on Lake Hartwell in Greenville, South Carolina. This marks Kung's inaugural appearance in the Classic, an event he has long awaited.

Kung's journey to victory was marked by perseverance and strategic adjustments. After finishing fourth after the first day of competition, Kung capitalized on a final-day opportunity, landing two monster bass early in the day. He then ventured to Lake Ontario for several hours without success before returning to the St. Lawrence River and landing the game-winning fish in the final 20 minutes of the event.
