Owner credits entire team for Quarry victory in Canadian Derby

Henry S. Witt Jr., an eight-time leading owner at Assiniboia Downs, flew to Edmonton and claimed victory in the $200,000 Canadian Derby on August 22. The horse he rode, named Quarry, was purchased from Churchill Downs for $80,000 on June 20. Witt had bet $100 on his horse and returned over $1,800, part of which went to the grooms, particularly Juliana LeRoux, who also groomed Quarry.

Witt admired LeRoux's gentle approach to her horse, noticing how she petted and talked to Bergheim, a horse known for leaning on people. Witt believed that kindness and communication were crucial for a horse's performance. He expressed gratitude to his entire team, noting that their collective effort was key to his success. Witt tipped the grooms, jockey, and other staff members, emphasizing the importance of a well-functioning team in winning. Quarry was nominated for the Super Derby at Louisiana Downs and the Remington Derby.
