At least 37 dead and hundreds evacuated after strike on Kyiv weapons depot

At least 37 people have died and nearly 400 have been evacuated following a Russian drone strike on a weapons depot near Kyiv, Ukraine. The explosion occurred late on Friday, damaging nearby buildings, including a care home for the elderly and disabled. President Volodymyr Zelensky described the storage site as "definitely shouldn't have been there" and launched an investigation into "terrible negligence."

The attack is the second of its kind near Kyiv in recent months, sparking outrage. Four children were among the 42 injured in the explosion, with a rescue operation ongoing in the Bucha district. Russia's Ministry of Defence claimed it targeted an ammunition depot holding components for long-range unmanned aerial vehicles. The blast damaged about 130 homes in the nearby village of Myla, with structural damage reported.

President Zelensky deemed the decision to store explosives in the village "absolutely unacceptable" and initiated criminal proceedings against those responsible. Ukraine's prosecutor general is reviewing the legality of the storage, as well as the actions of officials. Meanwhile, Kyiv experienced additional drone strikes, with five people injured across the country on Saturday.
