At least 37 dead and hundreds evacuated after strike on Kyiv weapons depot

A Russian drone strike near Kyiv resulted in the deaths of at least 37 people, with hundreds displaced after the depot storing weapons for Ukraine's military was hit late Friday. The strike caused explosions that damaged nearby properties, including a care home for the elderly and disabled, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The storage site was described as "definitely shouldn't have been there" by Zelensky, who launched an investigation into "terrible negligence" on the part of those who stored explosives near residential areas. This attack marks the second time a munitions depot near Kyiv has been hit in recent months, sparking renewed anger. Four children were among the 42 people injured, with a rescue operation ongoing at the Bucha district site.

Russia's Ministry of Defence stated that its forces targeted an ammunition depot in Myla, a village west of Kyiv, containing components and launch boosters for long-range unmanned aerial vehicles. The explosion damaged around 130 homes in Myla, with local resident Liubov Pavlenko describing the property damage as "completely damaged".

Ukraine's Prosecutor General's office is reviewing the "legality of the placement and storage of explosive objects and materials" near residential buildings in Myla, with investigations into the "actions of officials who made the relevant decisions" underway.
