93 schools housed in dangerous buildings in Larkana to be relocated

Larkana district has approved the relocation of 93 dilapidated schools housing 5,230 students, staff, and teachers. These buildings, identified as dangerous through a survey jointly conducted by the education department and school heads, are situated in Larkana city, Dokri, Bakrani, and Ratodero. The department's DEO-Primary, Aneesur Rehman Jalbani, announced the permission on August 7, 2026, aiming to ensure the safety of students and teachers.

Temporary accommodations for the affected individuals will be provided in nearby safe schools, mosques, private guest rooms, or tent schools. Jalbani highlighted that the department would conduct a ground survey during the relocation process. Earlier, around 250 schools were found in dangerous conditions, but many have since been repaired or reconstructed.

Of the 93 schools, most cater to male students. The chief monitoring officer, Dr Ahmed Shah, emphasized the urgency of relocating these highly dangerous schools in a letter to the Larkana DEO-Primary on August 30, 2026. The current enrollment stands at approximately 5,230, but a ground assessment and verification of the schools' conditions are pending.

Concerns have been raised about the availability of essential facilities like water and electricity in the temporary accommodations and the distance between these locations and the students' and staff's homes. Jalbani clarified that the Works and Research Section was not involved in this survey, as the monitoring and evaluation section was assigned the task.

The Sindh Building Control Authority's involvement in the survey was not commented upon by the officer.
