800 Russian jet-powered drones launched over 4 days as attacks enter 5th straight day

President Volodymyr Zelensky reported on August 30 that approximately 800 Russian jet-powered drones were launched over a four-day period as attacks on Ukrainian cities entered their fifth consecutive day. The attacks began with explosions heard in central Kyiv around 12:30 a.m. local time on August 31, according to journalists on the ground in Kyiv Independent.

Russia has recently shifted its tactics to daytime kamikaze drone attacks against Kyiv, keeping the capital in a constant state of alert with frequent air raid alarms. Homes, businesses, and other civilian infrastructure have been targeted by these attacks.

Zelensky emphasized that Russia's strategy is to wear down Ukraine and its people, as Moscow continues to launch nearly 1,500 drones daily. The primary challenge in defense lies in intercepting these jet-powered drones, which travel at speeds of up to 600 kilometers per hour. Currently, Ukraine's combat aircraft are primarily responsible for protecting against these attacks.

Ukraine is actively seeking effective defense mechanisms against the jet-powered drones. Defense Minister Yevhen Khmara disclosed that Ukraine has tested four potential interceptors against Russian jet-powered Shahed drones, with one company having the most successful technology. Zelensky urged the nation to deliver a response and raise the interception rate to over 90% in the coming fall.

In the past week alone, Russia launched nearly 2,000 attack drones, over 1,600 glide bombs, and 31 missiles, including North Korean ballistic missiles, against Ukraine, indicating a surge in attacks.
