‘We’ve been so worried’: Another B.C. couple missing after Nepal flash flooding

Another B.C. couple, Sumit and Shubakshi Rawla, are among the 32 Canadians unaccounted for since the Nepal flash flooding, according to recent reports. The couple was on a guided pilgrimage when they went missing on August 26. Kenisha Rawla, their daughter, expressed their deep worry, stating they have made over 200 phone calls to their parents in hopes of receiving any signal.

Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand urged caution, noting no Canadian deaths have been confirmed among the 32 Canadians unaccounted for. The Rawlas were traveling with Port Moody residents Dhaval and Megha Shah, who remain missing. Their relative stated they lost contact with the group around 8:30 a.m. on the day they disappeared, leaving the whereabouts of the missing group unknown.

Thousands are still missing, with at least 579 confirmed dead. The devastation is evident at one of Nepal's main border crossings into China, where the area is submerged in mud and debris. Tamara Demuria, a humanitarian officer, mentioned that some communities are cut off and cannot be reached to assess the damage. Ottawa has committed $5 million in humanitarian aid and dispatched five consular officials to Nepal.

The Rawla family emphasized the need for rescue teams, as the fear and anxiety of their parents and extended family continue to grow. Gaurav Subedi of the Nepal Cultural Society of B.C. stressed the importance of community and emotional support for those affected.
