We’ll continue to act firmly against those profiting from destruction of forests and water bodies — Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has pledged that his government will take strong measures against those who profit from the destruction of Ghana's forests and water bodies. He described illegal mining, or galamsey, as a severe threat to the nation's survival. This statement came during a ceremony at the Jubilee House on Saturday, August 29, 2026, where he appointed Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings as the new Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, and Chief and Religious Affairs Minister Mahama Ayariga.

Mahama emphasized that the destruction of Ghana's forests and water bodies through illegal mining poses one of the greatest threats to national survival. He stressed that this administration will continue to act firmly against those who prioritize private profits over the collective well-being of the people. In appointing Dr Agyeman-Rawlings, Mahama charged her with providing determined leadership in safeguarding the country's natural resources and ensuring a healthier future for future generations.

Mahama outlined the key elements of environmental protection: sound science, effective regulation, consistent enforcement, and active community involvement. He connected environmental degradation to public health issues, noting that polluted rivers, contaminated soil, poor sanitation, unsafe air, and improper waste disposal negatively impact citizens' health and strain healthcare systems.

Dr Agyeman-Rawlings' medical background, Mahama argued, positioned her well to understand and address the human consequences of environmental destruction.

The President called for collaboration between traditional leaders, district assemblies, scientists, civil society organizations, and local communities in the protection of Ghana's natural resources.
