We’ll act firmly against those profiting from destruction of forests and water bodies — Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has pledged firm action against those whose pursuit of profit leads to the destruction of Ghana's forests and water bodies. He emphasized that illegal mining, known as galamsey, poses one of the greatest threats to the nation's survival. The President made these remarks at a ceremony in which Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings was sworn in as Minister for Environment, Science and Technology.

President Mahama challenged Dr Agyeman-Rawlings to lead determinedly in safeguarding the country's natural resources and ensuring a healthier future. He stressed that environmental protection must be grounded in scientific knowledge, effective regulations, consistent enforcement, and active community participation. The President drew a link between environmental degradation and public health, noting that polluted water, contaminated soil, poor sanitation, unsafe air, and improper waste disposal eventually impact citizens' health and strain hospitals.

Dr Agyeman-Rawlings' medical background gave her a strong foundation to comprehend the human consequences of environmental destruction. Consequently, her role as Minister was both environmental and humanitarian. The President called for collaboration between traditional leaders, district assemblies, scientists, civil society organizations, and local communities to protect Ghana's natural resources.
