UK deploys response team to Nepal after floods

The United Kingdom has dispatched a Rapid Deployment Team to Nepal in response to catastrophic floods that have devastated the nation along the Nepal-China border. According to PUNCH Online, flash floods struck Nepal on August 26, 2026, after a sudden influx of water inundated the Bhote Koshi River in the mountainous Rasuwa district, near the border with China. Nepalese authorities reported extensive damage to homes, roads, bridges, hydropower facilities, and other critical infrastructure.

On Friday, the UK's Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office announced that a specialized crisis response team comprising trained staff would arrive in Kathmandu on Saturday to bolster consular operations and coordinate assistance with local authorities. This deployment is part of the UK's broader response to the flooding, which has affected thousands of people and caused widespread devastation across Nepal.

The FCDO stated that the team will assist British nationals and their families, provide consular support, and work closely with local authorities and emergency responders.

Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband emphasized that the UK is deploying the team due to the scale of the emergency, stating that the safety and welfare of British nationals is their top priority. The UK is also providing a £5 million humanitarian package to aid Nepal's response efforts, which includes support from UN, Red Cross, and NGO interventions.

The package builds on the UK's 15-year commitment to strengthening Nepal's resilience to climate-related disasters. The FCDO advised British nationals in Nepal to contact the British Embassy in Kathmandu or the FCDO for consular assistance and support for those concerned about family or friends affected by the flooding.
