The walk Vegi still wants to finish

S Vegiyathuman, the 85-year-old former president of the Federal Territory Athletics Association, is determined to fulfill his late wife's last wish by walking again. Once known as the King of Walks and Runs, his life has changed dramatically after a spinal cord injury left him wheelchair-bound. However, his wife Anathaletchumy, who passed away recently, had repeatedly encouraged him to exercise regularly and walk once more.

Vegiyathuman, who played a significant role in promoting athletics in Malaysia, including organizing the Malay Mail Big Walk, Sunday runs, and the first 21km half marathon in 1989, is still hopeful. He attributes his determination to his wife's unwavering support even in her final days. Despite the change in his life, Vegiyathuman continues to exercise and remains optimistic about regaining his ability to walk.

His friends and the athletics community in Kuala Lumpur continue to celebrate and participate in various events, reflecting the culture that Vegiyathuman helped nurture over the years.
