Sabah clam hunter survives crocodile attack after friend beats nine-foot reptile on the head

Beaufort, Aug 29 — A clam hunter named Hamdan Samad survived a crocodile attack while searching for clams in Sungai Siungau, near Kampung Lubok Weston, on Thursday. The 4pm incident left him with injuries to his left leg and right hand. According to Kampung Weston Village Chief Masri Latif, Hamdan and his friend, Ag Sabtu Omar, were about to exit their boat when the nine-foot-long crocodile suddenly attacked him.

Their struggle ensued as the reptile clamped its jaws around Hamdan's leg. Fortunately, Ag Sabtu emerged from the boat and managed to free his friend by hitting the crocodile on the head repeatedly until it released its grip. Hamdan then realized he had bite injuries to his hand and leg, and escaped from the river. He was subsequently taken to the Weston Health Clinic before being referred to the Beaufort District Hospital for further treatment.

Masri urged residents, particularly fishermen and anglers, to exercise caution when engaging in activities along the river. He noted that crocodile sightings in the area have been increasing, and he called for action to address the threat posed by the reptiles. Masri had reported the incident to the Wildlife Department, who were planning to trap the crocodile. A similar incident had occurred several years ago, involving a woman who survived after her companion fought off the crocodile.
